Highland Home School Second Graders Build Model Community

Highland Home's Second Grade Community

The second graders at Highland Home School have been learning about the people and places in a community.  They each participated in building a large model of their community for display.  Ms. Tara Bailey's students were assigned businesses to construct.  Mrs. Best's class made the houses and apartments for the neighborhood.  Mrs. Eiland's second graders constructed the playground equipment, stop lights, road signs, lamp posts, trees, bushes, and roads for the community project.

The community consisted of Main Street, where all of the businesses were located.  This included shops, restaurants, the courthouse, police station, fire station, a realty business, and a church. One student even constructed a hospital to be included. All were decorated with sidewalks, lamp posts, greenery, park benches, and parking spaces.

Other parts of the neighborhood consisted of one and two-story houses, apartments, Highland Home School, a Shell Station, railroad tracks, a church, and a neighborhood playground and park.

The students really enjoyed making this project and were very proud to display it in their hallway for others to see.  This was a fun way to show others what they had learned about their community.
